Maria Markus – I dream of mountains

Kohtasin Alpit ensimmäisen kerran Sveitsissä vuonna 2021 ja minulle, Oulun seudun tasamailla kasvaneelle, jonka sukujuuret ovat vahvasti lakeuksilla, tekivät nuo majesteetilliset huiput lähtemättömän vaikutuksen. Yhden vuoden tauko vuorien näkemiseen synnytti minulle kaipuun ja syvän mielenkiinnon vuorimaisemaan. Sisäisesti olen tuntenut itseni kuin Richard Dreyfussin näyttelemäksi Roy Nearyksi, Steven Spielbergin vuoden 1977 elokuvasta Kolmannen asteen yhteys. Elokuvassa Neary veistää ja rakentaa pakkomielteisesti, sisäisen palon ajamana, vuoren muotoa.

Alpit on Euroopan korkein ja suurin vuoristo, joka ulottuu kahdeksan valtion alueelle. 40% Euroopan käyttövedestä tulee Alpeilta. Jo nyt ilmastonmuutos on pienentänyt huomattavasti Alppien jäätiköitä, vaikuttanut lumen määrään ja aiheuttanut sään ääri-ilmiöitä (niin Alpeilla kuin muuallakin Euroopassa). Alppijäätiköiden sulaminen ja lumettomat Alpit olisivat katastrofi Keski-Euroopan vesihuollolle. Ilmastonmuutoksen takia jäätiköt sulavat nykypäivänä ennätyksellisen nopeasti, talvi on lyhyempi kuin ennen ja kesä kuuma ja pitkä. Olemmeko menossa kohti elinkelvotonta Keski- ja Etelä-Eurooppaa?

Kun ajattelen vuoria, ajattelen Alppeja. Ja kun ajattelen Alppeja, oloni on katkeransuloinen, sillä yhtä aikaa minut täyttää sekä ihmetys ja ihastus vuoristojen massiivisuuteen ja kauneuteen että kaikessa aina läsnä oleva ilmastoahdistus. Ilmastonmuutos näkyy myös meillä Suomessa, ehkä ei niin rajuna, mutta selkeänä jos suostuu katsomaan. Usein lähellä oleville asioille saattaakin olla sokea ja kauemmas tähyäminen voi tuoda parempaa perspektiiviä.

Tämä näyttely on rakkaudentunnustus Alpeille; täynnä huolta, kiitollisuutta ja kaipausta.

Maria Markus (s.1983) on painotekniikoihin ja paperiin intohimoisesti suhtautuva taidegraafkko. Markus on valmistunut kuvataiteilijaksi Kankaanpään taidekoulusta ja sekä opiskellut että opettanut Limingan taidekoulussa. Markus osallistunut näyttelyihin niin kotimaassa kuin ulkomailla. Inspiraatiota ja teemoja töihinsä Markus löytää arkisista asioista, luonnosta, tieteen maailmasta, mytologioista ja mystiikasta.

Maria Markuksen yksityisnäyttely Limingan kirjaston näyttelytilassa on osa näyttelysarjaa, jonka Oulun Taiteilijaseura -63 ry. järjestää Pohjois-Pohjanmaalla ja Kainuussa vuosina 2025-2026 yhteistyössä alueen kuntien kanssa. Mukana on 27 kuntaa ja taiteilijaa.

Oulun Taiteilijaseura on Pohjois-Pohjanmaalla ja Kainuussa työskentelevien kuvataiteilijoiden ammattijärjestö ja näyttelyiden taiteilijat ovat seuran jäseniä. Näyttelyissä esillä olevia teoksia voi hankkia omaksi paikalliseen taiteeseen erikoistuneesta Arto taidelainaamosta. Arto sijaitsee Oulussa, mutta näyttelyn aikana lainatut ja ostetut teokset toimitamme Liminkaan näyttelyn päättyessä. Tarjolla on lähes 2000 teoksen valikoima 120 paikalliselta taiteiijalta Pohjois-Pohjanmaalta ja Kainuusta.

Oulun Taiteilijaseura on saanut näyttelyiden järjestämiseen avustuksen Uudet klassikot -rahastolta.

Näyttely on mukana virallisessa Oulu 2026 kulttuuripääkaupunkivuoden ohjelmassa.

I dream of mountains exhibition is a dream about mountains, but also a small nightmare about climate change.

I encountered the Alps for the first time in Switzerland in 2021 and for me, who grew up on the plains of the Oulu region, those majestic peaks made a lasting impression. A one-year break from seeing the mountains gave me a longing and a deep interest in the mountain landscape. Internally, I have felt like Roy Neary, played by Richard Dreyfuss, from Steven Spielberg’s 1977 film Close Encounters of the Third Kind. In the film, Neary obsessively sculpts and builds the shape of a mountain, driven by an inner fire.

The Alps are the highest and largest mountain range in Europe, spanning eight countries. 40% of Europe’s drinking water comes from the Alps. Already, climate change has significantly reduced the Alpine glaciers, affected the amount of snow and caused extreme weather events (both in the Alps and in the rest of Europe). The melting of the Alpine glaciers and a snowless Alps would be a catastrophe for the water supply of Central Europe. Due to climate change, glaciers are melting at a record rate today, winters are shorter than before and summers are hot and long. Are we heading towards an unlivable Central and Southern Europe?

When I think of mountains, I think of the Alps. And when I think of the Alps, I feel bittersweet, because at the same time I am filled with wonder and admiration for the massiveness and beauty of the mountains and the ever-present climate anxiety. Climate change is also visible here in Finland, maybe not so drastically, but still clearly if you are willing to look. Often, we can be blind to things that are close by, and looking further afield can bring a better perspective.

This exhibition is a declaration of love for the Alps; full of care, gratitude and longing.

Maria Markus (b.1983) is a graphic artist with a passion for printing techniques and paper. Markus graduated as a visual artist from the Kankaanpää Art School and has both studied and taught at the Liminka Art School. Markus has participated in exhibitions both in Finland and abroad. Markus finds inspiration and themes for her work in mundane things, nature, the world of science, mythologies and mysticism.

Maria Markus’s solo exhibition in the Liminka library is part of an exhibition series that the Oulun Taiteilijaseura -63 ry is organizing in Northern Ostrobothnia and Kainuu in 2025-2026 in cooperation with the municipalities in the region. 27 municipalities and artists are participating.

The Oulu Artists’ Association is a professional association of visual artists working in Northern Ostrobothnia and Kainuu, and the artists in the exhibitions are members of the association. The works on display in the exhibitions can be purchased from the Arto art lending agency, which specializes in local art. Arto is located in Oulu, but we will deliver the works borrowed and purchased during the exhibition to Liminka at the end of the exhibition. There is a selection of almost 2,000 works by 120 local artists from Northern Ostrobothnia and Kainuu.

The Oulu Artists’ Association has received a grant from the New Classics Fund to organize the exhibitions.

The exhibition is included in the official Oulu 2026 Capital of Culture year program.
